Downloading and installing the MathematicaHandbook for the first time is a 4-step process. If you already have an activation code and want to download the latest version, skip to Step 3.
- $MachineID: You must find out the unique ID number associated with your computer hardware and your installation of Mathematica. (If you are not on the computer intended for the download, stop now and go to that computer. )
- Activation Code: You will obtain your activation
code by entering your registration code. [If you no longer remember
your registration code, click the lookup link.]
Fill in the registration code and the $MachineID you received in Step
1. Make sure that your $MachineID starts with a 5, 6 , or 7. If it
starts with 00, you are probably using a MAC address, which is
incorrect. Once you have a valid $MachineID, click the "Get
activation code" button to receive an activation code.

- Download Installer
Next, download the installer appropriate for your version of Mathematica .
Click on this link Version6.x if you have version 6.0 or greater
Click on this link Version7.x if you have version 7.0 or greater
Open the installer in Mathematica by either Opening it from the pop-up dialogue box to install it directly or saving it to your hard drive and then opening it. Be sure that you have a fresh Mathematica session and that no other programs are running.
- Install MathematicaHandbook
Click the Start Installation button in the Mathematica program to begin installation. A dialog box will open and ask you for your activation code. The installer will determine which operating system your machine runs and install the appropriate version of the Handbook.
The installer will fetch the book files (about 45 Mb) from a server and unpack them. This process will take 2 minutes on a fast machine, and up to 6 minutes on a slow one, so be patient. When it is finished, MathematicaHandbook will automatically open to its Preface in the Mathematica Help browser. In subsequent sessions, the MathematicaHandbook can be found in the "Add-ons & Links" tab. of the Help Browser in version 5.x, or in Help, Documentaion Center, Installed Add-Ons in version 6.0
Launch Mathematica. A blank document (Untitled-1) will appear. On this page, Type $MachineID followed by Shift-Enter.
Remember Mathematica is case-sensitive. Expect a 14 digit number that starts with 5, 6, or 7.
